Apple to bring this environment-friendly feature to iPhones

Apple is bringing a ‘Clean Energy Charging’ option for the iPhone later this year, as per a report by CultofMac, based on what Apple has shared in a footnote of the iOS 16 announcement. The tech behemoth says that the feature is meant to decrease the carbon footprints of users and plans to introduce it by the end of 2022.
According to the report, the feature will come to the iPhone as part of an iOS 16 update scheduled for later this year. Apple says that the feature “aims to decrease the carbon footprint of the iPhone by optimizing charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy resources.”
Clean Energy Charging: How big its impact could be
With the clean energy charging option, Apple will be the first company to roll out such a feature on this big a scale as there are over a billion active iPhone users the world over and upon imagining the ramifications of this big a group using the feature, there is a possibility that the Clean Energy Charging does some good for the environment. Based upon the reception and further tests, Apple may also decide to expand this feature to its iPads and MacBooks later.
Optimized Battery Charging: The current charging feature
Currently, the iPhones have the Optimized Battery Charging feature which is designed to prolong the lifespan of the battery by charging it slowly past a certain level. As per Apple, the iPhone uses on-device machine learning to learn about the daily charging routines of users and when Optimised Battery Charging is enabled, it can delay the charging past 80% in certain situations. The feature is activated only “when your iPhone predicts it will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time. The algorithm aims to ensure that your iPhone is still fully charged when unplugged.”, says Apple on its support page.
In the iOS 16 announcement, Apple also revealed that iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities and support for the smart home connectivity standard ‘Matter’ will also arrive by the end of 2022.
